The aim of the conference is to think through the geographies of the Anthropocene, with a particular emphasis in how the flows and exchanges that emerge from Asia and its diasporas can help better define approaches both conceptually and methodologically. We hope to explore new approaches to “nature” that identify important cultural, historical and religious connections and exchanges that explain where and in what form natures are to be found in Asia and its diasporic communities, and who has been tending them, which can help ground and contextualize the spaces and historical moments through which the Anthropocene has emerged. The conference will be interdisciplinary and cover a broad chronology. We are invested in putting contemporary challenges posited by the Anthropocene into dialogue with deeper histories, and in thinking through how recentering conversations about the Anthropocene around global Asia can fruitfully enable us to reframe longue duree histories of global exchange, better understand dynamics between localized engagements with nature and global histories, and also enact better responses to contemporary debates about the nature and causes of contemporary climate change and other environmental crises.
